We are a long standing group of archers with a history going back to 1955. We shoot all year round, and have established and stable facilities for indoor, outdoor and also Field Archery. Members of both FITA and GNAS, we participate in local and regional events, as well as holding our own annual events for other clubs to participate in. Beginners’ courses are held periodically, subject to number of applicants and availability of a suitable venue. There is a charge for the four week course and this comprises of between 8 and 10 hours tuition. Go to the "Interested" page where there will be more details concerning us and training. If you want to know more about archery in Sussex, Crawley Archery Club, membership, associate membership, beginners courses or tournaments, send an email and a member of the committee will reply. In the event you do not have email facilities, please contact our Club Secretary Mrs. Val Wickenden on 01342 327660. |

Being members of the national umbrella organisations gives us access to county run events, including the coaching sessions they conduct. However, Crawley has three GNAS qualified coaches of its own, available to assist any level of archer, and there to ensure novices have a good introduction to archery. Our indoor range at the Copthorne Preparatory School is available on Thursday evenings from October through to April, commencing at 8.00pm and finishing at 10.00. In addition to being able to practice, we shoot competitively once a month as part of a national postal league. The club was formed in 1955 as a section of the Pictorial Machinery Company sports club, breaking away in 1957 to become Crawley Bowmen. In 1964 a new venue was acquired and the name changed to Crawley Archery Club. Since those early beginnings the club has had many homes, shooting outdoors at Crawley football club, Hazelwick, Thomas Bennett and Ifield schools, Hazelwick school again, Oakwood football club, a field in Steers lane, Tinsley Green, and now at Perrywood Sports field in Salfords. Indoor venues for winter shooting have been Hazelwick and Thomas Bennett schools, Crawley and Bewbush Leisure centres, an old cold draughty hangar at Gatwick, the Edgeworth sports hall at Gatwick and since the start of this winter season, the Copthorne Preparatory School. Until the early eighties target archery was predominant with a little clout once or twice a year. In 1980 contact was made with the East Grinstead club, whose mainstay was field archery, using a secluded area of woodland situated in copthorne. Arrangements were made that allowed Crawley to shoot there twice a year learning more about field craft. Over a period of time East Grinstead lost its members ceasing to exist in 1986. With growing number of our members shooting field on a regular basis, arrangements were made for the club to take over the grounds vacated by East Grinstead. We continue to do so, regularly shooting around the permanently laid out course, more often during the winter months although the course is open throughout the year. At least once a year the club organize a major two day Record Status field tournament, in the past hosting The English, SCAS and Sussex Field Championships. A number of club members have at sometime in the past 15 years represented the club, the County, the Region (SCAS) and three individuals have had the honour of representing Great Britain in World and European Field Championships. |
